Fibre Fair & Grandmother Goodies

Tapestry wool (and one spool of lovely linen) from the Fibre Fair

Just a little shopping spree brag blog post here. I visited the Calgary Spring Fibre Festival on May 12, 2018 and picked up a few different items.

From one seller I bought a lovely spool of natural hemp (as recommended by my friend from @Black Sheep Textiles) and from Aubusson House Fibres Fine Yarn & Supplies I bought a number of spools of tapestry yarn. These were $10.00/lb, and I bought 3lbs. This should be plenty of yarn to play around with, and usually sells for $15.00 for a 1/4lb spool.

The Grandmother’s Fabric Sale was also super productive for yarn. For $1.00 I filled a grocery bag with as much crochet cotton as I could fit – the photo above is my “haul”.

I didn’t find a lot of good, usable wool at the Grandmother’s sale – but I did find a huge spool of black and a smaller each of royal blue and tan. I don’t know for sure that these are 100% wool; fibre testing will still be needed. I also found a HUGE spool of natural blond hemp. It’s a little more shaggy than the lovely stuff from the fibre fair above, but still seems pretty nice. I tried making some hand-made three-ply rope with it with a friend who has a rope-making jig, but the jig didn’t have the right weight and clamp set up, so the rope didn’t turn out. Perhaps another time!
