RAM Vikings – cups and spoons

Another display from the Viking Exhibit at the Royal Alberta Museum (RAM) in 2019 was about eating tools.

This included:

  • Clay pots – from Jutland, Denmark
  • A stone weight for fishing – from Thisted, Jutland, Denmark
  • A spoon that they described as “Ornamented bone or antler” from Hovindsholm, Norway.

They really didn’t have much other information about this display – while the locations were recorded… there’s no time frame for any of these items. In all honesty, a lot of the things in this area felt sort of thrown together – there was very little interpretation or context, and a lot of the things didn’t even have a strong theme.

Still, I figured I’d take some photos, because there might be a time when I want a more historically-informed feast kit (no time soon though!) and having some references would be great.
