RAM Vikings – Völva

Volva staff from the Royal Alberta Museum, shown with a display of three Valkyrie figurines.

Volva staff from the Royal Alberta Museum

Super quick post today from the 2019 Viking exhibit at the Royal Albert Museum (RAM) – because there really was only one artifact to show!

This iron staff with a handle was found in Fuldby, Zealand, Denmark, and has been attributed as a Völva’s staff.

The display had a little description, that the Völva “was  a seer and a kind of shaman. In Old Norse Völva means ‘wand carrier’.”

This is also a wee bit of a teaser for the other artifacts displayed in the case…. stay tuned for a post about the Valkyrie figures also shown here!
