Heidi Swapp Screen print kit

I LOVE a good craft kit – something where pretty much all of the materials to get started are included so I can try something out with a low commitment.

I did some screen printing in school, and LOVED it – but it is pretty involved with a number of tools needed, so when I saw the Heidi Swapp screen printing kit at Michael’s I thought I’d give it a whirl.

A weekend of art

Just like my last post from the April 12th art show, on the weekend of April 26-27 I enjoyed another art show – a few actually!

Saturday, April 26 I started off at the Calgary Community Painters Society show at the Triwood Community Centre.

I really thought that the encaustic cows were great – but I don’t like cows!

From there I headed to the Calyx show

Here are a few of my favourite pieces:

(Oh. and I love how the bright lime vehicle was parked right behind the bright green sign!)

Then on Sunday the 27th, my friend and I went back to the Calyx show. They have different artists each day, so there were different things to see. Interestingly enough, there were several artists who had been at the Calgary Community Painters Society show the day before – though there weren’t too many duplicate paintings.

On Sunday I ended up purchasing two paintings. Interestingly enough, they were done by the same artist who I already have another painting by. Now comes the struggle of trying to figure out where to HANG them!

Hopefully there will be more shows coming, and maybe I’ll try to get some photos of my new acquisitions to share too!

Calgary Sketch Club show April 12, 2014

On April 12, 2014 I attended another Calgary Sketch Club show.

I didn’t purchase anything, but like other shows, I thought I’d share some of the images from the show that I really enjoyed.

I attended the Calgary Sketch Club show last October as well.

Artistic gifts

Before the holidays I mentioned that I had picked up a piece of glass as a gift at the Calyx art show. Now that the holidays are over and the gift has been given – I thought I’d share it here with you.

The glass serving tray (designed for crackers and cheese) was created by Fused Glass Artist Hellen Beamish.

So pretty!

Of course, at the top is the painting I bought by artist Joyce Boyer. I chatted with the artist at the Calyx show, where she told me that the background is sort of a water-colour effect using pastels (on a special paper, watered down with crushed chemical fluid…. which I also don’t remember!) and then regular pastels on top for the details. It’s gorgeous! I don’t actually have it hanging yet… but soon… soon…

Calyx art show & sale

If you follow me on Twitter, you might remember back in October I tweeted about the Calyx art show. I visited both on Saturday, and again on Sunday, and I thought I’d post a few photos now that the event is over – and encourage you to attend upcoming shows too!

Calyx Distinctive Arts was founded in 2001 and currently host two weekend-long (2-day) exhibitions/sales per year in Calgary. The directors and up to thirty-five guest artists on each day display and sell high-quality art from a variety of mediums including pastel, oil, watercolour, and encaustic paintings, along with glass work, bead work, textiles, metal work, pottery, and other sculpture along with wearable art like jewelry.

Calyx shows offer the opportunity for art buyers to meet and discuss art with the artists they’re purchasing from, and the artists retain a higher percentage of the purchase price than some other selling methods. Since the overhead is low, artists can keep the cost of high-quality artwork affordable to a variety of art buyers.

In turn, artists can get feedback directly from the art-buying public, and network and support other artists. The show can accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Debit cards along with cash.
Their website currently lists the upcoming shows on April 26 and 27, 2014 followed by the next fall show on October 18 and 19, 2014

The iPhone photos of artwork are shown only as an example of some of the high-quality artwork exhibited at the Calyx show, and no infringement is intended. Some of the artists whose work I have illustrated here can be found at:

  • Oksana Zhelisko is a classically-trained fine artist originally from the Ukraine now living in Edmonton, Alberta.
  • Terri Heinrich is a self-taught local Calgary artist who works in a variety of mediums.
  • Karen Biko is a local artist who comes from a family of artists.

I did end up getting a painting at the Calyx show, along with a piece of glass as a gift… which I’ll show off – after the holidays!
Stay tuned!
