Complete “celebration” Italian outfit including the teal figured velvet overdress

For Caterina’s elevation I wanted to make a Giornea – and overdress for the Italian Renaissance costume not unlike my previous Giornea. However, this time I wanted to try a different style, with an open front rather than open sides. I thought that this would be flattering, and would nicely show off the under dress (Gamurra).

I started by making a “muslin” or test garment/ mock up. I used a red and gold scroll home decorating fabric, which I’ll blog about soon. (Click the 1480s Florence tag to see all of my Italian garments.)

Throwback Thursday: Off-white silk corset

Back of the white silk overbust corset

Back of the white silk overbust corset

I’m calling this a Throwback Thursday because this is actually a corset I made a while ago (so I don’t have any work-in-progress photos either). I made this to sell, back when I was hoping to get commissions for custom work (I’m not looking to do custom work anymore).

Last week I showed off a white silk corset using gorgeous sheer embroidered fabric, and this corset uses the same beautiful fabric!

A bit about this corset:

This is an off-white overbust corset with a variety of textures on the outside. Some panels are white silk with sheer cream silk with cream and silver swirly embroidery. Other panels are off-white shantung silk with applied satin ribbon. The ribbon is a darker cream. Other panels are plain off-white shantung silk.

A bit about this corset:

This is a mostly white silk underbust corset. The majority of the fashion fabric is white dupioni silk, and there are two front panels which are white silk with an overlay of cream sheer silk, embroidered with a random swirling pattern in off-white and silver.

I’m calling this a Throwback Thursday because this is actually a corset I made a while ago (so I don’t have any work-in-progress photos either). I made this to sell, back when I was hoping to get commissions for custom work (I’m not looking to do custom work anymore).

A bit about this corset:

This is an overbust two-layer corset. The lining is black cotton, while the outer fabric is purple hand-dyed dupioni silk. Four panels of the corset (centre front and side-front) are embellished with black net and golden floral fabric. Because of the nature of hand-dyed silk, there are variations in the colour throughout the corset – these are not stains or flaws; just a factor with hand-dying.
