Craft Swap – Inspired by Nature

Completed sachets with more little bags waiting to be filled.

Completed sachets with more little bags waiting to be filled.

In my recent post “I’m naming all the stars” I mentioned that I’ve joined a craft swap. For September, the theme was “Inspired by Nature” and I swapped with my partner in early October. Now that the surprise won’t be ruined… I can share it here too!

For my craft, I went to my garden (the closest to nature I’m going to get) and harvested some of my hops and lavender. Both are said to have calming scents which can help with good sleep, so these sachets are meant to be beside or pillow-side so the scent can influence for rest.

Largess ideas

At the SCA Festival of the Snow Eaters, October 28-30, 2016 there will be a Dirty Half Dozen Largess Challenge – enter seven items, six will be donated to Their Majesties, and everyone who contributes can select one item for themselves. There will also be additional prizes…

I thought I’d compile a list of different possible Largess projects and ideas partially for myself, but also partially for anyone who might be interested in making something to contribute.  I took ideas from various sources online, including the Largess Maker’s Facebook group, Pinterest, and a local participant’s list.

I divided this into 11 categories:

  1. Apothecary
  2. Culinary
  3. Glass work
  4. Leather work
  5. Metal & wire work
  6. Paper work (Scribal and otherwise)
  7. Pottery
  8. Sewing, knitting & related
  9. Weaving & spinning
  10. Wood work
  11. General craft

Bags for Largess

Five tote bags

Five tote bags

I’ve made a number of bags to give away as largess or to put prizes in for A&S competitions over the past year, and today I have even more to show off.

I have a few books to give away to individuals who win A&S competitions, and most of the bags I’ve made (and all of the ones I still have) so far have been pretty small – too small to hold the books, so I needed to make up some larger bags!

For the Festival of the Snow Eaters in Windwyrm, the autocrat (and A&S defender), Ingamar of Ravenheim wishes to host a Dirty Half-Dozen Largess Challenge.  I’ve offered to help with this (as she’ll doubtlessly have a LOT on her plate already!)

Format:

Each competitor should donate 7 individual items for Largess. These can be 7 of all the same item, or 7 items on a common theme. More than 7 items will of COURSE be welcome, though more than 7 items will not get ‘extra points’.  (6 would be a half-dozen… 7 is what makes it ‘dirty’…)
