I have just one more post to share with you from the Vikings in BC museum exhibit before I return to things I’ve made instead of just things I’ve seen.
The photos I’ll be sharing today are ‘from the kitchen’ so to speak of a Viking Age settlement in Sweden.
The items in this area were from a display on daily life in a trading centre. The display said:
“Trading centres would have attracted people seeking to sell their goods and services. Excavations of such sites also show that metal and foundry activities took place in small buildings.
The centres were probably very dirty and unhealthy. There were no fields to fertilize, so human and animal waste was dumped in ditches, along with household rubbish and waste from crafts and trades.
Given the unpleasant living conditions, craftspeople might have been forced to move to towns, rather than making a free choice.
However, only a very small proportion of the population lived in trading centres, so evidence found there is not representative of all Viking Age settlements.”
The vessel at the top of this page is made of ceramic, and is listed as “Tatinger ware of Central-European provenance” found in a grave at Birka.
Mjölnir bowl (hard to photograph; it’s so shiny!)
I’m currently the chair of the Social Committee at work, and one of our projects is an annual event in April. Last year we chose to do a pottery-painting party which was hugely successful. We brought in mugs along with paint and tools, the staff painted their mugs, and then we took them to one of those “paint your own pottery” places to have them glazed and fired. Continue reading
Beautiful purple and blue bowl
I mentioned back in November about a pottery show I attended, where I picked up a few of my holiday gifts – WAY in advance. Now that the holidays have passed, and I’ve given away most of the gifts (… and for those I missed catching up with before the holidays.. just pretend to be surprised!)
For gifts I bought:
- A gorgeous purple and blue bowl
- A fantastic blue/green teapot
- A lovely blue/brown mug
- …. and then, just for me – I bought a blue, black, and red bowl.
Fairview Pottery sale
Back in May, I went to the Fairview Studios Pottery Sale at the Canyon Meadows Community Hall. I took some photos, and since the posts about their Open House were so popular I thought I’d post them now, rather than waiting until after the holidays (since I bought some of my holiday gifts WAY in advance there…)
My cousin attends classes at the studio, and she recommended I attend the sale.
