After how happy I was with my spiderweb shelf, I put the call out for ideas for other creepy – spooky – goth symbols to start a little creepy collection. Little shelfs for electric tealights, maybe the odd crystal or two, one of my miniature leather plague doctor masks, my stuffed bat.. you know, regular stuff like that.

I had a few people chime in with ideas, and I decided to go with one of them (well, actually two, but this post is just about the one) – a bat!  This is made of 1/8″ Baltic birch plywood. The bat is one piece of wood, while the shelf is actually a stepped two-piece shelf which I think gives it a little more dimension – and hopefully gives it a little more structure too since it’s a larger surface area for me to glue onto.

Years ago I bought a top that I have grown to ADORE – I wear it often and always love the way it feels and fits. It’s plain black knit with a sort of shiny (almost leatherette) contrast shoulder and back yoke, and I wear it often enough that I know some day I’m going to be crushed when it is no longer wearable.

With that in mind, I decided to knock off the pattern a while ago, so I could re-make the top, and maybe even in some different fabrics/colours.

Of course… starting with black-on-black!

After stitching up a few other embroidery projects, I found myself on the Instagram page of mask-maker Phant0masy, who makes amazing fantastical creatures largely using machine embroidery and jewelry making techniques. I was totally in awe of the idea of creating a structural, 3D object using machine embroidery, so went about trying to create something for myself.
