If you follow me on Twitter, you might remember back in October I tweeted about the Calyx art show. I visited both on Saturday, and again on Sunday, and I thought I’d post a few photos now that the event is over – and encourage you to attend upcoming shows too!

Calyx Distinctive Arts was founded in 2001 and currently host two weekend-long (2-day) exhibitions/sales per year in Calgary. The directors and up to thirty-five guest artists on each day display and sell high-quality art from a variety of mediums including pastel, oil, watercolour, and encaustic paintings, along with glass work, bead work, textiles, metal work, pottery, and other sculpture along with wearable art like jewelry.

Calyx shows offer the opportunity for art buyers to meet and discuss art with the artists they’re purchasing from, and the artists retain a higher percentage of the purchase price than some other selling methods. Since the overhead is low, artists can keep the cost of high-quality artwork affordable to a variety of art buyers.

In turn, artists can get feedback directly from the art-buying public, and network and support other artists. The show can accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Debit cards along with cash.
Their website currently lists the upcoming shows on April 26 and 27, 2014 followed by the next fall show on October 18 and 19, 2014

The iPhone photos of artwork are shown only as an example of some of the high-quality artwork exhibited at the Calyx show, and no infringement is intended. Some of the artists whose work I have illustrated here can be found at:

  • Oksana Zhelisko is a classically-trained fine artist originally from the Ukraine now living in Edmonton, Alberta.
  • Terri Heinrich is a self-taught local Calgary artist who works in a variety of mediums.
  • Karen Biko is a local artist who comes from a family of artists.

I did end up getting a painting at the Calyx show, along with a piece of glass as a gift… which I’ll show off – after the holidays!
Stay tuned!
